COVID-19: This Is Not Our Finest Hour

I am a front line RN swabbing for COVID-19 and rationing my PPE (personal protective equipment) because we are probably going to run out.

I have dealt with communicable diseases my entire career and am not afraid of coronavirus.

But I am discouraged by the stupidity and selfishness I am seeing in the public.

A middle-aged woman I swabbed yesterday COUGHED ON ME and didn’t bat an eye or say excuse me or anything. I was very stern with her about respiratory hygiene but don’t think it made a difference.

Then I swabbed a young woman whose friend videoed her getting swabbed cuz it was so “funny”. I told her she did not have my permission to include me in that vid. She adjusted the angle of her smartphone (probably covered with germs) and continued filming.

Another woman asked if we had any COVID-19 cases here; I was finally able to recover enough to say “Do you not pay attention to the news?”   “Well, yes…”   “Then how did you miss this?” She shrugged. So did I.

The guys who think it is cute to say they have just returned from Wuhan…it goes on.

This is not our finest hour.
