Books and Stories; Nighttime Reading Rainbow

Before he was Geordi LaForge, LeVar Burton was Reading Rainbow, one of the best shows ever. (Are you humming the tune now?) Books and stories are the great escape, allowing us to experience places and events and lives otherwise impossible.

Listening to audiobooks is a great way to pass your commute; I did the entire Harry Potter series that way. E-readers are nice in certain circumstances but personally, I like hard copy books. Paperbacks because they are more portable but hardcover will do.

I am in the midst of Patrick O’Brian’s epic saga of Jack Aubrey and Steven Maturin during the Napoleonic Wars (you can get a taste of the stories by watching the movie “Master and Commander, the Far Side of the World”). I like to sprinkle other books in and amongst Lucky Jack’s adventures depending on my mood, so I often have two books going at the same time.

When I was in elementary school and left to my own devices I would read a book a day. Now I mostly read after I crawl into bed at night and depending on the how they day went I might read two chapters. Or only two sentences.

A couple of times I dozed off while reading on my e-reader and it fell forward and clocked me in the face. That’s another reason I like regular books; they tend to flop sideways.

Sleep has not been great for a long while now and when I wake up at 2am I reach for a book. It makes the insomnia less annoying.

Here is my latest haul. What are you reading or listening to these days? (Or the wee hours of the nights).
