Our Lady

Nope, not Catholic. Or French.

But I have always loved Notre Dame Cathedral for the history and the architecture and the skill and the art of her builders. I imagine the thoughts and hopes and prayers and dreams of the workers infused into the raw materials.

What were they thinking as they crafted something most would never see finished?

Flying buttresses. Stained glass. Carvings in wood and stone. What it must have been like to live while she rose above the city.

What it must have been like to live with her familiar presence on the skyline, or picking her out from a distance.

Our Lady.

Ours. Humanity’s.

New craftsmen and women will be called to fill those long-empty shoes for I believe she will rise again.

And if I ever make it to Paris, my visit to her will include this addition to her story; “In the fire of 2019…”

And I will feel the mended place where my heart broke for her, for us, on this day.
